How To Avoid Talking Yourself Into The Wrong Role

It all starts with a conversation.

Let's say you're considering a new career opportunity that sounds exactly like what you are hoping for. Before you say yes, take the time to get clarity on your role and responsibilities, understand the pathways for advancement, discuss the entire compensation package and confirm that your manager and HR are aligned on all of it.

The Right Questions Are Key
One client came to me after being offered a director-level opportunity, only to be told that she’d start at a senior managerial level and that they’d move her into the higher role at the end of the budget year. Another client was seeking a promotion and was told he needed to invest in a new certification to be considered. In both cases, there was hope but hesitation. And that’s the perfect time to pause and ask questions like: "Is there a written plan for this role (or career path) with checkpoints and mutual accountability?" "What is the total compensation package—including salary, vacation, equity and benefits?" It's ideal to get everything in writing.
