Beyond Salary: What To Negotiate In A New Senior Leadership Role

A move into senior leadership changes more than a professional’s compensation or place on the organizational chart. It often brings broader responsibility, greater visibility and higher expectations, making it important to understand not only what the role offers but also what it will demand. Clarifying the scope and conditions of the position before accepting can help professionals determine whether they’ll have a realistic opportunity to succeed.

These negotiations are also an opportunity to address important aspects of the role that may not be obvious from the job description or offer letter. Here, our founder Kathy Shanley joins members of Forbes Coaches Council to share what professionals should look to address beyond salary and title when negotiating a move into senior leadership.

Written Expectations And Commitments

Look beyond salary and title and negotiate clarity. Understand the scope of your authority, what success looks like, and the resources and support you’ll have. Most importantly, get it in writing. If you’re promised expanded responsibilities, authority or a future promotion, ask for a clear written plan with expectations and checkpoints. Why? Doing so ensures you’re accepting the role that actually exists, not the one you hope will eventually exist. - Kathleen Shanley, Statice
