What 11 Years of Coaching Have Taught Me About Leadership

Eleven years ago, I launched Statice with the belief that the right question can change everything. Today, we’re celebrating more than a milestone. We’re celebrating momentum, impact, and the human potential behind leadership growth.

In that spirit, here are 11 leadership truths I’ve learned over the past 11 years. These insights continue to shape my work with executives, changemakers, and teams across the country:

  1. When asked to name a great leader, people almost always describe emotional intelligence skills. EQ isn’t optional, it’s the differentiator.

  2. “Help me understand…” is still my go-to phrase. Curiosity unlocks connection.

  3. Fear shrinks possibility. Ask: If I let go of my fear, what’s possible?

  4. Delegation is less about letting go and more about knowing what’s on your “don’t delegate” list. Then let go of everything else.

  5. If you don’t invest in yourself, why would anyone else? Leadership starts with self-leadership.

  6. “I have no choice. I’m stuck” is rarely true. Choosing to stay is a choice. Owning it can shift everything.

  7. You need to quit the habits, roles, or narratives that no longer help you be your best. Let go to grow.

  8. The #1 barrier people cite to achieving their goals? “Just me.” The good news: you have the power to get out of your own way.

  9. Leadership isn’t a solo act. The best leaders co-create clarity, accountability, and trust.

  10. Confidence is built in action, not rumination. Lead boldly, even before you feel “ready.”

  11. You don’t need authority to influence. You need presence, adaptability, and clarity. The most effective leaders know when to guide with direction (push) and when to draw others in through questions and collaboration (pull).

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking better questions. Thank you to every leader who’s trusted me to walk alongside your journey.
