12 Things I’ve Learned as an Executive Coach
Twelve years ago, I launched Statice with one goal: to help leaders and teams thrive. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of coaching CEOs, new managers, executives, physicians, association leaders, and teams navigating everything from organizational change to difficult conversations to career transitions. Along the way, my clients have taught me just as much as I hope I’ve taught them.
In honor of our 12th birthday, here are 12 lessons I’ve learned over the years.
1. Great leadership is rooted in emotional intelligence.
Whenever I ask people to describe the best leader they’ve ever worked for, they rarely start by talking about technical expertise. Instead, they describe leaders who build trusting relationships, make thoughtful decisions, and pause before reacting. Emotional intelligence isn’t a “nice-to-have.” It’s what people remember. 2. Curiosity is more powerful than assumptions.
There’s something magical that happens when you replace assumptions with questions. Two of my favorite phrases are, “Help me understand...” and “Do you see it differently?” Those simple questions have opened doors that certainty never could. 3. Fear shrinks when you take action.
Fear loves keeping us stuck. Whenever I hear someone say they can’t move forward, I encourage them to ask, “If fear weren’t part of the equation, what would be possible?” Then take one small step. Action has a funny way of quieting fear. 4. Delegation starts with knowing what not to delegate.
Successful delegation isn’t giving everything away. It’s first deciding what only you should do. Once you’ve identified your “don’t delegate” list, almost everything else becomes fair game for developing others. 5. Invest in yourself.
If you won’t make your own growth a priority, who will? The best leaders I’ve worked with intentionally create time to learn, reflect, and develop themselves... even when they’re incredibly busy. 6. “I'm stuck” is usually a story we tell ourselves.
When someone says, “I have no choice,” I often invite them to reconsider. Staying in a job, a role, or even a difficult situation is still a choice. Recognizing that gives us back our power. 7. Quit what no longer serves you.
Not every task deserves your energy. Some habits, meetings, and responsibilities simply don’t move you or your organization forward. Letting go of what’s unimportant creates space for what matters most. 8. The biggest obstacle is often... us.
When I ask clients what might get in the way of achieving their goals, the most common answer is, “Just me.” The encouraging part? If you’re the obstacle, you’re also the solution. 9. Stand for something.
Decide what you want to be known for. Write it down. Then make sure your daily actions reinforce those values. Your reputation is built one decision at a time. 10. People support what they understand.
Whether you’re leading a restructuring, introducing AI, or implementing a new strategy, don’t just explain what is changing. Explain why it matters and how each person’s work connects to the bigger mission. Understanding creates buy-in. 11. Great leaders adapt. They don’t lead everyone the same way.
No two people are motivated by exactly the same things. The more we understand how people think, communicate, and approach work, the better we become at building relationships, reducing conflict, and helping others succeed. 12. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about helping other people discover theirs.
Of all the lessons I’ve learned, this one may be the most meaningful. My greatest joy has never been solving someone else’s problem. It’s been watching leaders discover their own strengths, build confidence, and become the kind of leader they always hoped they could be. Thank you to every client, colleague, friend, and supporter who has been part of the Statice journey. You have challenged me, inspired me, and reminded me every day why I love this work.
